Branding
Hub for European Refugee Education (HERE) was born out of the University of Nottingham, and managed by a team of experts in European refugee education. HERE is a digital platform for the collation, fostering and dissemination of research and knowledge relating to the education of refugees in Europe.
The HERE logo plays with the first letter E by inverting its colour. This is symbolic of the fact that refugees are all too often overlooked or forgotten by mainstream society. The resulting negative space creates two horizontal lines in the form of an equals sign which represents the concept of equality that is fundamental to HERE’s work and vision.

Promotion
A dotted, gradient pattern has been introduced into the logo to help draw attention to the missing letter E, and to represent the gradual dispersal of displaced people around the globe as they escape the epicentre of danger in the search for safety.
This dotted effect became central to the HERE brand – being applied to promotions in the form of organic squiggles and geometric shapes. Alongside a bold colour scheme and contrasting serif and sans-serif font combinations, the HERE brand became a confident, recognisable brand with a powerful underlying message.
A key feature of the HERE brand is its ability to adapt to different environments, situations and audiences.
The academic side of HERE’s work can be presented in simple, formal promotions using just the two primary colours [orange and stone] and simple two-font combinations. On the other hand, when promoting the networking side of HERE’s work which encourages community meet-ups and conversation, the brand can morph into a playful, bright and really creative identity to entice new members. All the while the brand remains recognisably ‘HERE’.

Digital
The HERE website acts as a central reference point for academics, practitioners and organisations working in the field of refugee education. The platform is broken down into three core sections: Database [a library of resources], Network [latest events and opportunities] and Insights [blog posts]. Each section is represented by a different brand colour so visitors can navigate with ease to their area of interest.
The Database uses specialised search and filter functionality to allow visitors to browse the 700+ resources in the database using multiple taxonomies. The HERE team received one-to-one training and a library of guidance videos, so they now manage all website updates internally without requiring our support.
